coming to Seattle area

I lived in Olalla, in South Kitsap for five months back in '98 (Kitsap is the name of the county that Bremerton is in), and then in Seattle through '99 and most of 2000, so hopefully I can help.

There is a game store in Bremerton, in the downtown area, a few blocks from the ferry. When I was there it was mostly wargame focused but there was some RPG stuff. I never had much luck there but hopefully you'll have more.

I actually used to go down to Tacoma for my game store fix in those days. There was a place called Bits n' Bytes that was great, but last I heard they had closed down or moved, and I can't find them listed online. There was also a WotC store in the Silverdale Mall up in North Kitsap. I'm not sure if it still exists now that they've closed a lot of their retial outlets, but it's still listed on switchboard.com, so that's a good sign.

Taking the ferry to Seattle is a good bet if you're making an afternoon of it, but is kind of a hassle just for a trip to the store. The game store in the city that I'd most recommend is the Dreaming, in the U-Distric. Added advantage is that the U-district is kind of a destination in itself if you're looking to poke around a bit. I've been to this store as recently as a year ago and it was still pretty good.

If you're not going to be getting around the city at all and want to stay conveniently located to the ferry, there's a store in Pike Place Market called Golden Age Collectables. They sell some games, as well as action figures, movie stills, comics, and other collectable stuff.

I wish I could help you more on finding an actual game, but I can't. But there are plenty of Seattle area games on these boards (not as many from Kitsap, unfortunately). You should check out the gamers seeking gamers forum.

When are you going? Hopefully soon, if you're into outdoorsy stuff at all. Late August and early September are beatiful there, but then sometime near the end of September the rain season will kick in and you're out of luck for several months. If you can, make time for a drive around the Olympic pennisula. It's beautiful and from Kitsap you can easily get to it. You can even lap it in a one day drive if you're motivated. If the weather holds up, you can stop for a brief hike in the Hoh rainforest (Olympic National Park), and even if it's not, stop at some of the numbered beaches out there for some dramatic views.

Have fun!

This was going to be my suggestion too, more because it's such a great hobbyist store in general than because of it's selection. Golden Age has lots of neat games (or did the last time I was there, a year or so ago), but the big draw is just the huge collection of cool stuff - movie props from Star Wars and Alien, lots of comics, lots of Japanese imports, lots of movie posters, old cult movies, just about everything.

I love that place.

Plus, Pike Street Market is just a great place to visit for an afternoon, particularly if you've got some cash to burn.

Also, I think every gamer would benefit from the Seattle Underground City tour. You can hit the tour near Pike Street, and it's totally worth it. In fact, the whole waterfront area is full of inspiring gamer stuff.

Also, if you like pubs/bars/beer, I love the Owl & the Thistle, which is within walking distance (though it's a good hike) of Pike Street Market. It's underneath one of the older hotels, as I recall. Man, that's a great pub.

Finally, Seattle's little China Town and International district has a few really neat places to buy import stuff of all sorts, or to eat a good meal. Worth checking out if that's your bag.
