His board name is Old One. Check out the thread I linked to a couple of posts above yours. Here it is:

The link to the D20 Economics System is embedded in PlaneSailing's post. It is one of those things that I keep meaning to dust off and revamp, especially now that 3.5 is out.

I made an abortive attempt to get the whole thing set up on an excel spreadsheet to automate the whole process, but couldn't get some of the formulas to act the way I wanted, so I tabled it.

Ahh...one of the many RPG projects wanting my attention :D!

Ran into the same problem recently, except I'm the player. The Mystara setting has some trade rules somewhere - I'd guess look at info about Darokin. Played around with those rules a bit ... they don't work that well for regular trade activity in my opinion.

In particular here's the sort of level of detail I want:
(a) buying prices in locations
(b) selling prices in locations
(c) costs of trading (hiring guards, mules, wagons), lodging in town, food for animals and guards
(d) duration between locations and time in town to trade
(e) market modifiers as you satisfy supply/increase demand, etc.

The Mystara system has (a), (b) and (d). (c) you can get from calculations using the 3.5E PHB prices. However, you then realise that the duration can be too small and the end result is profit per year can be too high.

I think my DM will end up fudging some numbers based on the Mystara rules.

Anyway, if anyone knows of trading systems with this sort of detail where profit doesn't end up being exponential long term, that would be great. (Old One's system is not too bad, but there's no direct account for how long it takes to get between (a) and (b).)

Well, in that case, this post in my thread on using Birthright rules in other worlds in 3rd Edition may be of interest.

The Minrothad Guilds gazetteer had sea-trading rules that could probably be adapted well, and I think they're quite similar to the Darokin rules. I wouldn't use prices out of the PhB though-those are retail, not wholesale. I would scale them back, perhaps using the Darokin/Minrothad tables as a guidline.

The PHB prices for mules, wagons, food, and lodging are probably fine. DMG prices for hirelings are ok too. For trade goods, I think we're using the Darokin rules.

How do the Minrothad rules handle duration back and forth, and supply and demand?

Thanks.

If I recall correctly, the Darokin rules (GAZ 11) are a later, updated, and modified-for-land version of the Minrothad rules (GAZ 9).

OLD ONE, Do you mind if I upload a respectful revision?

I really liked your approach.

I reworked it for my own uses and I'd like to share the work, but you didn't attach a policy for revisions\contributions etc... I like contributing to GPL or readily shared documents, wiki's and the like. I can't seem to message you or send you an email through the board but if you want I'll upload a PDF or Open Office file as "old one economics 1.1" or some such.

I think the additions are mostely organizational and all complimentary, but then I guess everyone who adds to a work thinks that :).

What ya think???

Sigurd,

That's fine...I would like to see your revisions.

Old One's Economic System 1.2

I'd like it if this were expressly released as public domain or gpl or something...

I can't take much credit for the work, but you can ding me for spelling or formatting errors :).

Sigurd

Who do I ask to expand the allowable file types to include Open Office Documents? For example this "sxw" (thats the extension) was one tenth the size of the PDF and everyone could contribute to it. Without buying MS Office.
