)Personally I'd say that all those settlers that did survive did so because they either had some skill, had help, or got extremely lucky.
Also I'd make a distinction between your wilderness settler breaking in new crops, and your established community with existing farms (run by skilled farmers who occasionally call in the peasants to do the harvests)
