AZRogues Seven Thones stuff is localized enough to make a good PoL the heroes can stumble into (it doesn't need to have been a world-spanning empire), but the dragonborn info would need to be taken whole clothe, unless it's only a clan of dragonborn suffering this problem.

Yeah, I just provided some notes on what I've done so far, for myself. :)

For the project as it seems to be being developed, I would just cut that dragonborn stuff out of my post completely. Same with the Tiefling info. It was just how I made the two races interesting for my own table. I wasn't sure where this was going and felt like rambling about where the POL took me. Now that I see how it would be handled it makes much more sense.

The empire itself that I imagined could definitely be redone for a large island, or some other section of a continent with barriers between it and the greater world around it. Tone it down some and add the barriers (the Landsdrop from the Thomas Covenent series, for instance) and it could just become a location to drop down into any campaign.

It would just be a very dark area where a Ritual went wrong and the darkness itself can allow for creatures from the Shadowfell to cross over, so people would be very, very afraid of the night. Travelers would be looked at in awe and just sending a message to a village more than a few nights travel would be incredibly important. That and the fact that the one real organization trying to put things back together is really just setting things up to complete the Ritual itself. :)

Openstreetmap is some open source software that basically lets you edit a map in a wiki-style format. Maybe someone with some bandwidth and the know-how can host a copy of the software and we can build a world, from the geography up.

I was thinking that a wiki format would be pretty interesting. That way you can let people set up links to other locations or off of generic tag lines.

This is a wonderful idea!!

And easy to adjudicate. You simply define the square area that each person designs, and make sure each area is self contained (so it prevents the problem of adding a new square suddenly affects everyone else's square).

What you could also do is Assign every square a terrain code:

For example for a desert square, you would assign the tile a D marking.

Also, all the old "Build me a X" and "n wizards towers (or so on)" threads from these boards are good for the gleaning for an initiative like this.

I was thinking along this line also, but not as structured as person A is assigned tile X, and that links to tile Y in a certain fashion. It's more like person A has designed tile X which fits nicely to the north of my tile. Where as another individual my want to take my designed tile and place it north of their's, but use person A's tile X to their south...and so forth. That way a person could flesh out a larger area in their campaign that could be totally unique and different than some else.

I was thinking more along the lines of linked tiles than fitted.

That way someone comes along and says, "I've designed a tile. It's so big and so wide, and does X in an interesting way. I think it would link well to other tiles with this river, this mountain pass, and this passage from the fey wild.

Then anyone else who has a river, mountain range, or portal to the feywild in their tile can pick it up and fit it on.

Not only is it flexible in terms of where things fit but also in terms of size and distance. I think any PoL setting should have big empty spaces on the map as well as things that shine out no matter how far away they are.
