New? Fresh? man 45+ people never read older stuff... but its still a good book, I'm heading more and more away from D&D because the groups playing it around here are... well.... tedious

Well, one has to consider that some players came to D&D with the appearance of 3.0e. I began in 1991 with the release of Rules Cyclopedia and played for five years without a single supplement. Furthermore, I lived (and still live) in an area where finding D&D material was far more difficult than it is today (thanks to the internet). While I choose the second "it's pretty good" option, it's not that hard to understand why there are some people who find the ideas in Complete Arcane new and fresh.

I'm sorry to hear you don't have a group you enjoy gaming with, but I can relate. I can't find enough players in this area to even attempt a decent game. After my current single PC campaign comes to an end I imagine I'll be done for a while as well.

I have a similar pedigree, though I started with AD&D1 instead of Basic. I still think Complete Arcane includes some fresh, interesting concepts. I seem to remember the older works imposing quite a bit of limitation on character concepts...
