Who's this WotC to tell me how to call things in D&D?

You can call them whatever you like. I don't call rogues, bards, and sometimes rangers expert classes. I classify them as skill-thingies.

That is why I used quotation marks around the word(s) "sub-class". They are sort of fighters, but they aren't.

In general, it is better to forget you ever knew 1st or 2nd Edition when trying to adjudicate 3rd Edition rules. Too many things are different from what went before.

The concept of "sub-classes" does not exist in 3rd Edition. There is no implicit carry-over from any one class to another; the use of terminology is much more specific. If a rule uses a single class name ("Fighter" in this case) and not a plural grouping ("arcane spellcasters", for example), it applies only to that class.
