Complete Warrior Reaping Mauler's Devastating Grapple

If a 5th level Reaping Mauler successfully pins an opponent for three straight rounds the opponent must then make a Fort save or die. So what happens if the opponent makes the save? Does he have to make it again next round if he can't break the pin? Or three rounds later? Or does the Mauler have to break the grapple and try again from scratch?

If this came up IMC, I'd rule like so:

- If the opponent makes the save, they wriggle around enough to avoid the death grip -- nothing happens, they don't break the pin, etc.

- The round counter is then reset: if the RM keeps it up for another 3 rounds, the opponent has to make another save or die.

What I want to know is why a RM would ever use this ability when sleeper lock is available. Rather than 3 rounds, he maintains sleep lock for 1 round -- from when he declares it until his next turn, assuming the target can't break the pin -- then coup de graces the snoozing opponent. Why wait 3 rounds when the saving throw is the same, and you can achieve nearly the same result in 2 rounds?

An immobile target is not a helpless target, you can`t coup-de-grace a pinned creature, unless it is helpless.

Right, but after a failed save under the sleeper lock, the target goes unconscious -- making it a perfect target for a coup de grace.
