Comprehend Languages and Animal Companion

Vorput

First Post
I'm playing a alternate bard from Unearthed Arcana in which I sacrifice some musical abilities to be nature-y and get an animal compantion (As a druid).

Question- if I cast Comprehend Languages, can I share that spell with my animal companion? And if so, am I able to talk to my dog and have him talk back to me? I think so... just want to make sure before I do it :)

It would allow your AC to understand everything you tell it (intelligence allowing, of course - an INT 2 AC won't understand relativity theory!), but not to speak to you.

The spell enables you to understand or read an unknown language, not speak or write it.

(emphasis mine)

But, I'd have Comprehend languages cast on myself as well, as per the druidic ability:

Share Spells (Ex)
At the druid’s option, she may have any spell (but not any spell-like ability) she casts upon herself also affect her animal companion. The animal companion must be within 5 feet of her at the time of casting to receive the benefit. If the spell or effect has a duration other than instantaneous, it stops affecting the animal companion if the companion moves farther than 5 feet away and will not affect the animal again, even if it returns to the druid before the duration expires.

Additionally, the druid may cast a spell with a target of "You" on her animal companion (as a touch range spell) instead of on herself. A druid and her animal companion can share spells even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the companion’s type (animal).

You'd have to ask your DM if he considers what a dog does to be "language". Perhaps you need Int 3 to use something that can be considered language.

Animals don't have languages. They're not smart enough -- thus, languages don't appear in their stat blocks.

Just get a wand of speak with animals and pump your Use Magic Device check. :)
