Comprehensive WotC 3.5 Index ... ?

Jeff Wilder

First Post
For a couple of years now, I've been toying with the idea of creating a master index of every WotC 3.5 book. This would include obvious things (classes, spells, feats, and so on), and less obvious things (artwork and maps, for instance).

The index would be subdivided by topic, so, for instance, if you were looking for good representation for your new dwarf character, you could flip to "Artwork," check out "Dwarf," and get a listing of books and page numbers on which to find illustrations of dwarves, along with a short description of the illustration in question. Similarly, the "Wizard" entry under "Prestige Classes" would refer you to books with that information, and likewise provide a short description of the class.

Now that 3.5 is "complete," it seems like a natural time to consider more seriously the creation of such an index.

Just gathering some information:

(1) What would be the interest level for something like this?

(2) What would be the interest level for helping with something like this? It would be a monumental undertaking for one person, but pretty manageable for 20.

Well, I would find the idea awesome. Even though I am not sure I'd ever get to use it, with 4E around and so. But the idea is too good to be given up, so I wish you a lot of luck and fellow 3E fans to help. ;)

Sounds like a great idea. Using the indexes that WotC created would be a good starting point.

Are you planning on including OGC? I know that's unlikely to be 'complete' for some time to come with many publishers still planning on doing 3e.

Count me in for one who would like to help/and/or see this. I would also like to see other publishers be part of this, as some of my favorite games come from Conan and Game of Thrones, neither of which are WotC...

Inasmuch as I have a "plan," it is to do WotC stuff first, excluding Forgotten Realms, then move on to the 3.0/3.5 Forgotten Realms stuff.

OGL/D20 stuff could easily be added, of course. Though I don't have any programming skills, I can't imagine that it would be difficult to create drop-downs, allowing a user to customize the index from available sources.

For those folks seriously interested in helping out with this, please contact me at the email address below. Assuming we get enough people -- I'm thinking 15, minimum -- I'd be up for starting real work in as little as a couple of weeks, following discussion and decisions regarding categorization and format.

Again, for those who can commit serious time and effort to this -- call it a commitment to index at least two books -- drop me email at:

Shameless plug: Jeff, you might want to download a copy of my complete D&D monster index. That isn't limited to 3.X monsters -- it covers all D&D monsters, ever -- but you are very welcome to extract the 3.X monster information from that if you think it will be useful for your index.

There is also a fairly complete reference list of D&D products on one of the spreadsheet tabs which might be useful to check the 3.X products.
