Computer game nostalgia thread

Great games, all! I remember playing all of Doom on a 386 that could barely handle running the game (so... slow...). And Castle Wolfenstein 3d (Spion!). And the original X-Wing/Tie Fighter series was excellent despite the dated graphics.

X-COM... man, that was a cool game. I even enjoyed the sequel, despite the fact that it was functionally identical to the original. I had a whole system of code-letters that I placed into the names of my squad-members, to identify their specialties. They died so often, it was a real triumph when one got promoted to Captain. Eventually I got to the point where two or three veterans would just remain in the transport, and use those guided missile thingies to pulverize the enemy UFO from a distance.

My first computer gaming addiction was Bards Tale II: The Destiny Knight. Man, that's the first time I played a game for 12 hours straight and forgot to eat.

Ah, the memories...

Not wishing to hijack the thread but several posters have listed X-COM among their favourites and X-COM Apocalypse is a personal favourite of mine. The X-COM games were descendants of the 8-bit Laser Squad games and the even earlier Rebelstar/Rebelstar Raiders games on the ZX Spectrum. Did it strike anyone else (as it struck me when I first played Rebelstar Raiders back in 1984, I think) how uncannily similar the game mechanics were to GDW's excellent Snapshot?

And who can forget the wonders of Oregon Trail.

My GOD I killed a lot of men, women, children and Oxen in that game! :D

But it was fun. It was the first game I ever played on an Apple II.

Hunt the Wumpus was great. And remember Lemonade? and Aztec?

Heh! I'd forgotten about Lemonade. Which version, the text only, the TRS80, or the Apple ][ Low Res?

Which for some reason brings to mind 'The Prisoner' where it would go from High Res to Lo Res just to try and break you.

And Deathmaze 2000, Kennedy Approach, and an old favorite that I'd forgotten about Laser Chess.

The Auld Grump, and Archon, Sargon, BattleChess, Dungeon Master, Elvira, Captain Blood....

Yeah, I remember Snapshot, and its spinoff Azanti High Lightning, and yeah, there were similarities, though I don't recall kneeling being an option in Snapshot.

Sigh, I really wish that someone would do a new version of X-Com, the old one won't run on my new machine...

And by the way Laser Squad has made a comeback - http://www.lasersquadnemesis.com from the writers of X-Com. Play by e-mail, but fun, and with okay graphics to boot!

The Auld Grump

And Murder on the Zinderneuff,
Racing Destruction Set,
One on One Basketball,
Deja Vu,
Spellcasting 101,
Liesure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards,
Maniac Mansion,
Little Computer People,
Castle Wolfenstien (the 2d version on the Apple ][)
Leather Godesses of Phobos,
Laura Bow and the Colonel's Bequest,
and on and on...

The Auld Grump, who should stop now....
*EDIT* And Ye Gods and Little Fishes I forgot about Elite!

Yeah it was the first game I had at home. It was on our Apple IIE. And many died every day thanks to that game. It always fet good to win that game, I played it for years even after we got better games. Ultima 3 or Oregon Trail it was almost a toss up, now when the gold box game came out there was no competition.
