One short table leg? ;)

Shell out for the proper one. If you use the book, you won't miss the cash and it'll be worth it. If you don't use it, it won't matter what you spend you'll still feel screwed. If you get the crappy but cheap one, you'll be kicking yourself everytime you come across a mistake. If you think dealing with the mistakes will consume more than three hours of your time (which it will if you plan to play the game for a while), and if you think that your time is worth at least ten bucks and hour (any adult in the USA, let alone elsehwere, should value their time at least to this degree), then there's no question you should pass on the crappy but cheap one and simply get the properly edited, newer version with all the bells and whistles and prestige it also carries.

On the other hand, it's none of my business...unless you want to save some money and buy stuff from me. ;)

If typos like "spellb.ook" force you to consume more than three hours of your time, then you've got problems that buying a typo-corrected version won't cure.

1st edition is 100% playable as is. Don't believe the hype.

The 'pocket' version will be crunch (rules) only.

jh

I am pretty certain that the pocket version has the same content (including noncrunch) as the full rules. (Just not the pictures, etc)

Maybe. I had to take a second look at the word even as I was first reading your post. My advice to anyone thinking of taking your advice (as charming as it is) would be to spend and hour in the bookstore reading a copy of the first edition and see if they are the type of person that extremely poor editing bothers.

I'm that type of person. Mongoose has really pissed me off in the (recent) past with their editing gaffes, and the 1st print run of the Conan core book was the straw that broke the camel's back. OTOH, I've been reading (here on EN World) that recent Mongoose products have been significantly better-edited than in the past. I, for one, will give Mongoose another try (especially as I'm interested in their Jeremiah RPG)....but this is their last shot. If the next Mongoose book I purchase--which is likely the Conan Pocket-sized--has slipshod editing, I'm through with them.

I believe it will have a few illustrations, just very limited when compared to the hardback..and B&W rather than color.

Nope, not a one. None of their pocket editions do. I have Modern, and looked seriously at Fantasy, not even diagrams for combat.

That said, I like their pocket editions, they are solid, have decent bindings, and do the job. I intend to pick up the one for B5. I may pick up Conan as well, but I want the hardcover first, the pocket edition would be a loaner copy.

Because you are posting online, I can't imagine why you couldn't order the Atlantean edition from a seller for almost the same price you can get the older edition.

Of course the Pocket Edition is another nice thing to have and I'll probably pick up one when it hits the streets.

Ahh here's one of the quotes I was looking for (emphasis mine):

Note that the Pocket Edition does lack a lot of the artwork, Howard quotes and Hyborian background of the hardback (we squeezed in as much as we could!) but _all_ the rules necessary for the game are present and correct.

I could have sworn that somewhere else there was mention of the art in the pocket version being b&w as well, but can't seem to find it at the moment.
