Conan 2nd Edition

But strangely Darlage doesn't seem like he is all that involved with the new edition.

Which is crazy-wierd, as he pretty much was the quality in the earlier edition.

Well, he's listed under "Additional Text" and "Playtester" in the 2nd edition. But again, not having the 1st edition (either printing) I can't really say if that's a major change.

Yes, I just found out about that. His involvement (thus far) in 2nd ed is the "Additional Text" in the core book (for creating the Temptress) and the Return to the Road of Kings book. I hear they he going to write three source books for Solomon Kane the RPG.

The Conan RPG is great. I have the Atlantean Edtion of the 1st edition, which is essentially the 2nd printing. Overall, it's one of my favorite d20 books. The new rules are cool and very gritty and do a great job of capturing the Howard/Conan feel.

As far as the 2nd edition goes, I was very disappointed. I didn't buy it because after reading a lot about it (and leafing through it), it didn't feel like a 2nd edition at all.

There's a thread on the Mongoose Conan forum that lists all the changes in the 2ed book and they definitely weren't enough to justify a new edition IMO. Plus, it's in B&W - blech.
I 2nd all of that, hur hur. :D But yeah, I do.

Poor Mongoose launching the Conan 2nd edition line within days of the 4e announcement. This sort of thing always depresses me, but I understand your point of view. I'd say pick up the book anyway. It's d20, sure, but it's self-contained (you don't need any of the D&D core books) and I've heard more than one person say that Conan: The Roleplaying Game had a significant influence on 4e.
Well, my reluctance is also based on only having so much money and the only folks in my area that I know that are interested in fantasy RPGs are primarily interested in D&D, not "some 3rd party fluffjob" to quote one of the guys I game with.

I did by the 1st edition book, and there was some neat stuff, but given a tight budget and material coming out for a game I really enjoy and am actively running (Star Wars Saga Edition), buying another version of the Conan RPG falls pretty low on the priority purchase list.

I know Savage Worlds has their own take on Solomon Kane (http://www.smithandrobards.com/product_info.php?products_id=295), but you're saying Mongoose is jumping on the Puritanical bandwagon too? Oy vey.

I can't be certain about this, but from what I've read Mongoose isn't going to producing a competing Solomon Kane rpg. This quote by Vincent Darlage appeared in response to the Savage Worlds take on Solomon Kane: "Some of you might be interested to know that Eric Rodriguez and I are writing three Solomon Kane sourcebooks."

I imagine that means he'll be writing sourcebooks that support the Savage Worlds: Solomon Kane rpg setting, but...I could be wrong.

I can relate. I've known players who won't touch anything that isn't WotC. Conan, at least, has the benefit (or curse, depending on how you view the movies) of being more ingrained in popular culture than say the Wilderlands of High Fantasy or Kingdoms of Kalamar (though I do love both of those settings).

I guess it's easier for me to grab up all these 3.0/3.5e settings while they're still around because I don't plan on switching to 4e. I have considered hopping back into the new Star Wars rpg (I had the previous edition, but sold them around the time Episode III hit the theaters), but I was so put off by the last three films and much of the expanded universe material that I just can't whip up any excitement for running the game. I would love to play in a Star Wars rpg, but...I'm the only DM/GM I know. C'est la vie!

Conan is probably the setting/system I am going to run when I finish my D20 Modern campaign. Vincent's material has been top notch IMO and when it comes time to round out my Conan RPG book collection, Vincent's books are on the top of my list to buy.
