I understand it won't be kid-friendly at all. Ron Perlman also played Vincent the Beast on the TV series Beauty and the Beast a long time ago.

I have to wonder why the news billed him as the "star of the Hellboy franchise" instead of the "star of the Hellboy movie." A franchise is a liscensing format used by businesses and I am not sure how an actor can be the "star" of one.

To me, that is just as weird as saying, "I own a McDonald's movie" when one intends to mean "I own a McDonald's franchise." A franchise and a movie are two entirely different things.

Interesting. On a side note, I just watched Batman Begins. I thought it was really good, for a super hero movie. Well done. It would be nice to see the storyline continue in other movies, scrapping the Tim Burton foundation and everything that came after...

Yeah, this has become an increasingly common use for the word franchise. I think it is meant to convey that the property Hellboy has been franchised for use in movies, comics, games, statues, action figures, etc., etc. The original owner still owns the name, image and idea, but licenses it out to others to develop and sell. Generally these days it is used in the same way as "cash cow."

Notice how the X-men films were referred to as films, not as the X-men franchise though. I would imagine there is a lot more marketing dollars involved with the X-men than with Hellboy - a character I had never heard of until I saw ads for that particular movie.
