Conan Challenge

This was orginally posted to the forum of conan.com on Oct.25.

"We're about a month away from the release of the next trade paperback, THE BLOODY CROWN OF CONAN, and I just saw the loose pages last week. They look GREAT! Gary's artwork looks as terrific as ever, and the paintings adapted to black and white brilliantly. Thank Crom for a first-class production department like we have here at Del Rey.

Remember the challenge, though. The book hits stores Tuesday, November 23, and all you Howard fans need to lay siege to your local book store. Buy your copies as soon as you can after Nov. 23. If you all hit the stores at once, we have a shot at getting onto the New York Times bestseller list. Won't that freak out the literary types!

There are a lot of book stores out there that only sell the bestsellers, so when BLOODY CROWN hits the list, hundreds of new stores will have to carry it. I think it's only actual "brick and mortar" stores--not the online stores--that report to the Times list, but if you've ordered from an online store, don't worry--that'll help, too. The higher we go on the online ratings, the more buzz we'll generate. So it's all good.

This is a chance to show publishers that there is still a market for Good Sword&Sorcery material.
Hopefully, if Conan makes it to the NYT list, other publishers will see this and start looking at either reprinting old material or start looking for people to write new sagas.

I was all upset when I found it wasn't coming out until the 23rd, since I wanted to read it on my trip home to Kentucky for Thanksgiving! (Read the first one on the plane for Christmas, and Solomon Kane on my trip to San Diego for work)

Just a reminder, Bloody Crown hits the shelves tomorrow. :D

I am really excited for this. Can't wait until the third one is out. Then I can ditch the Millenium library editions. They need to put out a Kull collection. Too bad Del Rey does not do other genres of fiction, it would be good to see Howards other works get this treatment.

Bison Books (an imprint of the University of Nebraska Press -- search their website for "Howard, Robert E.") is also issuing volumes of REH's oriental historical, weird Texan, boxing, western, and comic western stories early next year.

Del Rey does publish stuff which isn't quite fantasy/SF. I see no problems with them doing editions of Kull, Cormac Mac Art/Turlogh O'Brien, El Borak/Kirby O'Donnell, or weird stories. Or the James Allison stories, some of which are actually set in the Hyborian Age, or the miscellaneous historical fantasies.

I got the first book through the SFBC, and I think I'll wait for them to announce the 2nd one and then order it through them... I prefer their hardcover to the softcover ones at B&N.....

SFBC currently has the second book up on their website.
I picked up my pb copy yesterday and it is excellent!! The art is more in keeping with the "feel" of the stories and the additional material is wonderful!
Well worth its price.
