The Conan core book, and the accessories, are also among the most beautiful full color books i've ever seen. Very serious, adult oriented art that WotC couldn't get away with (well, not to the extent that Mongoose has, i don't think). A gritty game system that is definitely for fans of Conan, and if you're not yet, it will make you a fan.

As far as the scholar/magic system is concerned, it is better if used as a DM tool and NPCs... However, if you want to play a scholar there's nothing stopping you. As far as combat as a scholar is concerned, try to avoid it. At low level you spells are almost useless in combat. Make sure you stay behind the more combat oriented characters. The scholar receives the most skills points of any other class and you need to use this to your advantage. Put allot of points in alchemy and create throwable weapons like fire bombs and stuff like that. Use smart tactics to avoid being killed.

Overall it's my current favorite system, then again I'm a Conan fan.

Currently, after some suggestions from the GM, it looks like all the players are going for Soldier - just with various specialities. All former members of a Free Company whose commander was betrayed, framed and executed. Currently on the run from whoever did in our comrads.

Still interested in whatever comments people care to make about the system.

I ran a brief scenario using Free Companies and the Grim Tales mass combat rules, with 4 PC's as Aquilonian Blood Riders against an army of invading Picts (well, the PC's had some backup). It went pretty well, although i made the mistake of initially placing them too far apart on my brothers MASSIVE battlement. It took them half an hour to even meet in the middle.
