When Mongoose put out the earlier Judge Dredd game, they made it D20 rather than OGL, meaning that it required the D&D Players Handbook. That decision ignited a firestorm on various message boards, with a whole hoard of people expressing their extreme unhappiness at this decision, and accusing Mongoose of everything from misleading advertising to "price gouging".

I mean, AEG's Spycraft was released way before WotC's d20 Modern, and to this day still utilize the PHB with no plans to switch to d20 Modern rules.

They are working on Spycraft 2.0, which is set to come out this year. (2005) I don't think they are "Modern-izing" it though.

Do you really think new players but Conan. I bet Most (more then 70% of them) are gamers like us.

I think new players are as or more likely to buy Conan as they are Dungeons & Dragons.

I know that when I bought the recently reissued Conan stories off Amazon, there was Conan the RPG and it's supplements in all their barbaric glory. If I read and enjoy the stories (which anyone who has any chance of being a gamer is liable to do), I might well want to know what this game thing is about. That's doubly true since Conan doesn't have a recent electronic game to his name.

Many major book chains carry their RPG books in the fantasy/SF section; a potential gamer who buys Conan books may well see what, at a glance, might appear to be an artbook or gazetteer and pick it up. In reading what it's actually about, he may become interested in the game.

Now, you can make the case that the sort of new players who would enjoy a Conan RPG aren't necessarily served by the rules tweaks; likely to be older and more literate than the common young RPGer, they might prefer a lighter set of rules for their adventures. Mongoose does great flavor and very interesting rules, but "lite" is not an appellation I would attach to their products.

One thing that the Lone Wolf game has going for it that Conan does not, are miniatures. Does anyone know if Mongoose is going to make some miniatures for the Conan game? That would seriously rock as Conan is one of my favorite OGL books. (I'll probably pick up the Pocket version when it comes out.)

The pocket version is what I would recommend. Without art work and with further editting you will get more than your money's worth for that item. I would be sad, however, if they also reduced the liberal quoting from source texts.

I haven't read the original B5 hardback very closely, but the pocket edition quotes pretty liberally from the show. I'd guess that the Conan pocket edition will be all the text, and none of the pics.

All of the above plus a doctorate and a gaming (worktest) group of professionals like me. Perhaps others are similarly situated. I doubt it.

I've essentially shared all this information in the above posts along with my informed opinion about this subject. Do you have an opinion about the Conan RPG, Johnny Nexus, or are you just trying to bait me? If the former, feel free to share it. If the latter, save it.

You sure give a lot of importance to your doctorate. I don't see how that's particularly relevent to anything, though.

Why? Source texts are readily available for Howard's Conan these days.
