Cones and Lines

Cones and lines are out, eh? This is interesting news indeed.

I can't say I'm terribly disappointed, though. Lines, for all their iconic status, rarely came into play as much as area. For instance, how many casters took fireball as opposed to lightning bolt? And of those who picked the latter option, I'm sure most of them were taking it so they wouldn't catch their friends in a blast radius.

Some area effects slowed the game.

I guess anything slowing the game is out.

In 4E every area effect seems to be easily grasped.

Remember the famous 2E fireball that exhausted until every 10' cube was occupied? Now those were the calculation days!
