Configuring CD-ROM Drive from Slave to Single Configuration

I have an old P3 system that I let my son use for internet browsing, email, etc. It has been rock solid for 6+ years until lately and I think the issue of not booting properly is that the master CD-ROM gave up the ghost. And so I took that out hoping that is all it will take.

Here is my question (and I feel so much like a noob; I did try to google but I got nothing): Where do I place the tab to take it from slave to single configuration? As slave the tab was placed on the far left in the verticle position. Am I correct in that to make it singular I need to place it horizontally on the bottom two prongs center-right?

I hope I am making myself clear. This is an old system and it has been years since setting it up and I don't have my manuals anywhere. I couldn't even access Buslink's website.

Thanks for your help.

I think the jumper setting depends on the model - usually they have a chart on the drive itself.

You might try simply taking the tab out altogether - sometimes that works for a single drive

Usually, the drive will have the jumper locations for the various modes, shown on the drive somewhere. You will probably have to take it out of the machine to see it though.

Most CD-Roms I have seen, no jumper = single device. I have only seen a few devices that recognize a horizontal jumper.

I'd say try using it without a jumper. The worse that can happen is that it doesn't work.

SATA makes this so much easier since it doesn't use jumpers.

Yeah, is that ever true. But this is an old P3 system and its IDE. It has been rock solid for 6 years but recently it has become unstable.

I had a serious 0x35 error crash and now I can't even boot into the BIOS. The monitor screen remains black. The error beeps state it is my graphics card but I need to find someone who has an old AGP to see if indedd it is my video card. I don't feel like spending money on this system if it is not the card.

A shame, too, because the P3 has been a great second hand system.

You could use SATA with add-in PCI cards. But as you mention, probably not worth spending money on.

As to your current issue, ouch; sounds like that system is giving up the ghost. My guess is a faulty power supply shorted out your system (could also be poor power).
