D&D 5E (2014) Conjure Minor Elementals

I was looking over the 4th level spell Conjure Minor Elementals and i have a question for all of you. Unfortunately as i write this, i do not have a copy of the spell in front of me, so I apologize for any errors.

As I recall, the spell allows you to summon elementals of CR2 or lower. The Monster Manual has elementals at a CR 5. What do you use when someone casts this spell to represent the reduced CR elemental?

The spell only cares if the creature has the elemental subtype. You're not just restricted to the 4 with elemental in their name.

I don't have it in front of me at the moment I'm fairly sure mephits are summonable with the spell. There might be others but I can't remember at the moment.

2 Fire Snakes
4 Magmin or Dust, Ice or Magma Mephits
8 Mud, Smoke, or Steam Mephits

That makes sense. Unfortunately it seems that if you want something water or air you are more or less out of luck.

No, but I've statted up lesser air, earth and fire elementals at CR 2.

I noticed this too. This is one of the many areas where it would have been nice if they published a list of what qualifies so you don't have to manually scour the MM looking for them.

I'll bet dollars for donuts that the player companion for the next storyline adventure will have more elementals.

I know this is a rather old thread but I still want to post this for people still looking for this information.

I went through the 5e Monster Manual and here is what I found as far as Fey and Elementals with a CR rating of 3 and below.


Elemental:

Dust, Ice, Magma, Mud, Smoke, Steam, Mephit CR 1/4
Magmin CR 1/2
Fire Snake CR 1
Azer CR 2
Gargoyle CR 2
Water Weird CR 3


Fey:

Pixie CR 1/4
Sprite CR 1/4
Satyr CR 1/2
Dryad CR 1
Sea Hag CR 2
Green Hag CR 3
