Constant Powers?

The problems with this approach are:

1. Not all constant abilities may be integral to the class concept (some people don't want familiars/animal companions/special mounts, for example), so it would not be a good idea to build them directly into the class features.

2. Some constant abilities may be too powerful for a 1st-level character.

1. They could fall under something similar to rogue tactics (artful dodger vs. brutal scoundrel).

2. There could be "class abilities" that are picked up at higher levels. At the very least, I would expect paragon paths and epic destinies to have some more options when it comes to class abilities and tactics that are more constant in nature.

A feat sounds reasonable.

At Heroic, you can get an Animal Friend. It's small, familiar-esque, a bird or a bat or a toad or a cockroach.

At Paragon, you can get an Animal Warrior. It's large, Animal-Companion-esque, a wolf, a lion, a bear, an elephant, a griffon.

At Epic, you can get a Dire Animal. It's immense, high-level-3e-Druid-stuff, a dinosaur, a dire bear, a chimera.

Just as an idea. :)

And it wouldn't be limited to druids and wizards and rangers. If you want to be an epic-level fighter with a T-rex you ride around on, you might be able to.

And that would be AWESOME.

And if you're a ranger, perhaps you can give it some bonuses (magic fang style). And if you're a Wizard, you can share some spells with it. And if you're a Paladin, it comes from the Heavens and lets you shoot beams of radiant energy from its eyes.

Though admittedly that last one is just based on how AWESOME the image of a paladin astride a T-rex with lazer-eyes is.

I went the Braveheart route and figured they would come out his... other end. It would truly be Holy ****!
