Hello Everyone,
I was pondering the simplified 4E skills list and how the 3E list could be contracted, distilled and simplified. Pathfinder has sought to combine some of the more obvious skills (Disable Device & Open Lock) and group together others such as Stealth (Hide and Move Silently). However, you still have quite an expansive list. 4E has more dramatically contracted some skills (Acrobatics, Athletics) while leaving others quite specific (History).
I was wondering if you could help me come up with a contracted skills list that perhaps squeezes a little more into each category without leaving any so skinny that they would rarely be chosen.
For Example, off the top of my head:
• General Knowledge: (Intelligence)
o Appraise
o Geography
o Heal
o History
o Nobility & Royalty
o Religion (Deities, Traditions, Dates of Significance)
• Agility: (Dexterity)
o Balance
o Ride
o Tumble
o Stunts (4E - Generally getting from here to there whilst doing something interesting in between)
o Hide
o Move Silently
o Escape Artist (Slipping out)
• Athletics: (Strength)
o Climb
o Endurance (3E use fortitude save)
o Escape Artist (Breaking Out)
o Jump
o Swim
• Communication: (Charisma)
o Bluff
o Diplomacy
o Gather Information (Includes Local Knowledge)
o Streetwise (4E - Also Includes Local Knowledge)
o Intimidate
o Perform (Includes Disguise)
o Speak Language
• Perception: (Wisdom)
o Listen
o Search
o Sense Motive (Includes 4E Insight)
o Spot
• Lore: (Intelligence)
o Arcana
o Decipher Script
o The Planes
o Spellcraft
o Use Magic Device
o Religion (Undead, Esoteric Information)
• Adventuring: (Wisdom)
o Dungeoneering
o Handle Animal
o Nature
o Survival
• Deftness: (Dexterity)
o Disable Device
o Open Lock
o Sleight of Hand
o Forgery
o Use Rope
• Background: (Varies - Is more built up from the background given on character creation)
o Profession
o Craft
o Perform
o Speak Language
I think I may have pushed a few in here a little too hard - a few that seem to struggle to truly belong. Can you think of a more streamlined or "correct" set of groupings? How would you contract them?
Best Regards
