D&D 5E Conversion Ideas for Hoard Of The Dragon Queen

Thoughts so far

I've been looking over the module and my Greyhawk stuff, and here's what I'm thinking so far:

Since this will be with new players and a new campaign, I've decided to go with the more recent Greyhawk/Living Greyhawk era, post all the wars and everything. I previously used my own sort of version of Greyhawk which was mostly based off of the original Folio. I'm quite enjoying the idea of starting fresh, using the current state of Greyhawk, and trying to be quite faithful to all the great material that's been added over the years. Having not paid much attention, I missed all the controversy, but I do quite like where's it's all ended up. So...

Horned Society for Cult of the Dragon sounds pretty good. They are licking their woulds from Iuz, and scattered. Not much info on what they've been up to -- but whatever it is, it's evil/diabolical, and they are suspected of now being quite powerful.

I'm thinking I'll put the village of Greenest somewhere on the border of the Gran March and Bissel. That area is a bit sketchy right now. Normally peaceful, but with everything going on in Geoff, they eyes of the authorities are elsewhere. I'll put it close to the Dim Forest, and the Raiders Base can be somewhere south of it, also near the forest maybe. The other reason for this is for the whole Caravan bit to work well.

I'll have the players ride up to Thornward, where they will meet with the agents of the Harpers (Circle of 8? Still not sure?) & Knights (Not researched which group yet?). Then they will take a boat to Mitrik (Ahead of the raider's booty traveling slowly in wagons across country) to join the caravan heading west along the great road to Greyhawk, along the Great Western Road.

I haven't found much info on the Great Western Road yet, but it seems like that would be the most equivalent to they journey that's described in the module. Also it will take the same amount of time and cover they same amount of distance. I was going to have the GWR run through/past Veluna City, Verbonc, and Dyvers, with a final destination of Greyhawk. That seemed the most logical and likely most trafficked route. However, I found a map online that put the GWR going more northerly through Littleberg, then Dyvers, but that seemed less likely for the main east-west road across the Flanaess. Anyone know what cannon is on this??

Having Greyhawk equivalent to Waterdeep seems the most logical, and I think it will be exciting for players to have that as their destination.

Then the next bit will be in the Mist Marsh, just past Greyhawk. Not as far as the Mere of Dead Men is from Waterdeep, but I think the location is analogous. Again, I don't know much about it, but it seems that that might be a logical place for the Cult to be taking their booty. A nice central location in the Flanaess for them to converge on, that then zaps away to their hideaway/Lodge, which I'm going to put in the Raker Mts.

Not sure about the location of the location of the Well of Dragon. I was thinking that Perhaps the Great Rift Valley might do it. It's kind of near the Horned Society's old stomping grounds. Or they could have found somewhere new. Anyone got any other ideas???

On second thoughts, maybe the Horned Society would be a better stand in for the Red Wizards of Thay instead. In this adventure it is a splinter faction of the Red Wizards that are looking to overthrow their lich leader. In the case of the Horned Society, it would be the few of them that are left, looking for Tiamat's help to overthrow Iuz.

Maybe in this case it would be easier just to import the Cult of the Dragon wholesale, as they are more of a shadow society and don't really need a 'homeland' as such.

Probably the Zhentarim will be the Scarlet Brotherhood.
