D&D 3E/3.5 converting 7th-level 3.5e PC's to 4e

I'm DM'ing a game with 7th-level PC's in 3.5e, and we're converting to 4e. Any suggestions for what level would give a similar feel?

Keep the names.

After that, things are very different.

What classes are they playing? Weapons? Items? Favorite spells? Setting?

If you want real options, we'll need somewhere to start.

I can't read it seems.

If you go just by scale, level 7 in 3.5 is equivalent to Paragon levels in 4e, but you might want to start lower to get the feel of the new rules before you start selecting Paragon Paths. I'd just start a level 7 anyway (instead of 10).

Even though they should be well within or on the verge of Paragon tier (7th level is 35% of a max 20th level campaign; 35% of 30 is 10.5) I would seriously consider making them lower than seventh level.

First, because as it has been suggested above, this gives them time to get used to the system.

Second, because I get the feel that characters can do a hell of a lot more in combat in 4e than they could at an equivalent level in 3e.

I'd say try level 5. If it's too low, then you can always speed up the XP gain a bit after trying it out.

It's much easier to aim low and move the PCs higher if it doesn't feel right, than to aim high, make them higher level, and then realize you should have gone lower.

It's really not all that different.

To an extent, the 7-8ish range in 3.x feels about like 10-11ish in 4e, but that because Paragon Paths are the PrCs of 4e.

However, when you think about it 7th in 3.x is still 7th in 4e. 4e just included the Epic Level Handbook from the get go.

If you read through what characters are doing at the various levels of adventuring in 4e, it's pretty accurate. I never played epic levels in 3.x, and 21+ in 4e doesn't sound anything like any campaign I've ever been involved with.

Start at 7th. JoshR is right, even if the feel is a little off, you'll want the time to re-find the characters.
