D&D 4E Converting an existing campaign to 4e

OK -- so we are talking about converting our existing Age of Worms campaign to 4e. PCs are just short of 8th level. Are there any guidelines about changes to level to match the 1-30 range, or is an 8th level 3.5 PC the same as an 8th level 4e PC?

I'd take a look at the Monster Manual to figure that out. The players will probably want to stay the same level or move up a little, but they'll really cry foul if they're suddenly too weak to fight creatures they've been mowing down for their entire careers.

I am thinking that since 4e runs 1-30 and 3.x runs 1-20, I would make the PCs, basically, level*1.5. So my 8th level guys would be 12th.

Still not sure though.

I'd suggest doing it partially by comfort level (will folks be overwhelming by the number of options?) and monsters you want to throw at people

I think that campaign, from what I know, would support epic 4e play just fine and you could safely end it at any point 20 onwards... I'd personally be tempted to at least get to 24th for the final battle so you can have some 'When I die...' type action going on.

Ignoring *1.5 math, 11th and 12th are nice levels in terms of getting a fair amount of toys and having things to look forward to next level. In converting the shackled city for 4e that I'm doing, I looked at what monsters I wanted to use and how I expected to shake out levels, then picked a level I thought would work for where they were (11th, in my case)

I easily could have gone lower if I'd wanted to end the campaign at a lower level (which I considered) or give out less levels per adventure (I like giving out levels pretty quick though)

I am doing this with my Savage Tide Campaign.

I'm just starting "Here there be Monsters" and I'm starting them halfway through level 8.

So roughly 2.5 levels per chapter puts them at/around level 30 for the climax. Amusingly enough the "tier" breaks come at about the perfect times in the campaign.

I'm a masochist, I know, but I'm looking forward to all the work.

I've decided to make them 11th level.

I will let them convert them, but I will do the Magic Items (I think). It's starting to look like the second half of Hall of Harsh Reflections will be fairly straightforward, though I am going to look at the map as larger encounter areas and plan the encounters accordingly. I am hoping that I convert the encounters fairly accurately, but either way I think I can hack my way through it.
