Converting Greyhawk monsters

I just coined a new word:

Carpent (car-pent): –verb 1. to feel sorry, self-reproachful, or contrite for complaining querulously or unreasonably.

After carping about the minor typo, he carpented after his thoughtless act.



Fixed.

When a carpet snake senses motion or vibrations caused by any creature walking on its carpet, it begins to take shape in 2-4 rounds.

Tremorsense?

Is there any analogous spell or precedent we can use for the carpet form? I'm blanking a bit on this.

Here's a monster that uses a somewhat similar schtick...

Meld with Stone (Sp): A relief golem can enter a stone surface as a standard action as per the spell meld with stone. While inside the wall, any carvings or paintings on the wall shift and alter to accommodate the image of the relief golem that appears where it has merged. A relief golem can see and hear out of the stone surface that it is melded with. This effect lasts until the relief golem decides to exit the stone. The caster level for this effect is equal to the relief golem's Hit Dice. Casting stone shape on a wall containing a relief golem forces it to leave immediately.

Surprise (Ex): A relief golem melded with the wall receives a +20 circumstance bonus on Hide and Move Silently checks the round after exiting, often allowing them to surprise intruders.

That'll work pretty well, I think.

First draft:

Meld into Carpet (Su?): A carpet snake can enter a rug or carpet large enough to hold its length as a standard action. While inside the carpet, any other designs shift and alter to accommodate the image of the carpet snake that appears where it has merged. A carpet snake is aware of its surroundings using its tremorsense ability. Carpet snakes that have melded with a carpet do not require sustenance for up to a year, but a carpet snake may choose to leave its carpet at any time. This process requires two full rounds. SOMETHING ABOUT ATTACKING CARPET.

Should we put some kind of camo ability on while they're melded?

If we go with a camouflage ability (ie, Spot check required to notice), I'd definitely say so.

Yeah, that's a great idea! Camouflage is a good fit, too.
