Cool books for writers?

Grinning Loony

First Post
Hey guys! I wasn't totally sure if I would use a great deal of 3rd party stuff in my writing, but in my latest endeavor I used a whole bunch of stuff from the excellent Tome of Horrors. So, here's a question for the other writers and publishers out there: what books do you use (or think I should use) as resources? I've been designing a lot of adventures lately, so let's think about that, primarily. Another monster book would be nice, for instance.

The deal is whatever I decide to use I'd want to be all OGC. I don't want monster names (or feat names or spell names or whatever) to be PI, 'cause then they're tough to use.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I get a ton of use out of both the Tome of Horrors and also the Monster's Handbook by FFG. During the playtests, the players (all experienced and another prolific game designer) have no idea what's hitting them. It's nice. :)

I think the Penumbra Bestiary makes the critter names OGC, but I just got my author copy last night and don't have it in front of me now.

In GF Monsters the pdf monster book, the names are PI to the individual authors, but there is a contact list at the end. I was one of the authors there (I did the mummies and vampires, you can see my risen mummy template in the preview) and I would be happy to provide e-mail permission to use any of my PI in an adventure.

Can't go wrong with Bastion Press (any non-Oathbound stuff they do is 100% OGC) or Green Ronin (generous dollups of OGC, and great folks, to boot!). We also like the Tome of Horrors, but there are few who do not. Great OGC resources would also include our very own Book of Templates and any of the stuff by the prolific Phil Reed. All 100% OGC. Enjoy!

Cheers!

I looked it up this morning, in the Penumbra Bestiary the names are all OGC.

Minions Rebirth by Bastion Press is another pdf good one, all OGC and interesting creatures.

PDF might be a little more convenient than print simply because you can copy and paste the OGC monster info.

The Bestiary descriptions and stories behind the critters are closed content as are the adventure seeds and artwork but otherwise it is all open including the new related spells, prestige class, poisons, diseases, and items. Closed written content is in shaded grey on the sides while open content is in black and white.

I encourage you to check it out, once the revised Book of Templates is completed! :)
