Coolest bits of Unearthed Arcana

In my Land of the Crane campaign, I'm using action points, taint, and spell points with the fatigue/exhaustion option. In my Greenlands campaign, I'm using action points and the class-based defense bonus. It models a "low armor" setting quite well.

We use:
  • Action Points
  • Alternate Death and Dying
  • Spell Points
  • Weapon Groups
There are others, but those are the ones I most enjoy. I'd love to see all of them be "core" for 4E. There's a lot of retooling that should happen to really make spell points great, though.

I'd love to try a game involving the simplified classes or gestalt characters (not at the same time *shudder*).

So far we've used dwarven paragon class and the dragon totem variant barbarian (though we only use the mechanics, not the actual dragon totem). Both are being used by the same character. He's only been around for several sessions and will be retiring in a few more, so it's hard to say how well they've worked -- okay, I guess. The character is being retired because the player is leaving the campaign, not because of any problems with these rules.

Overall, I wouldn't say that Unearthed Arcana excites me too much. There's some good stuff in it, but a lot of what's there seemed to be done better in other d20 games. In particular, the class armor bonuses and the damage save mechanics both felt sloppily implemented to me, though I have to admit that I did not try them out in play.

I use the generic classes, which I am very happy with and I think I'll use forever (or till I get my hands on Grim Tales), though I have switched from Spellcaster to Spontaneous Casting Cleric and Sorcerer.

Action points: Some players burn them, some others hoard them, but they are a lot of fun at times.

Weapon Groups: Cool. Finally Dwarven Clerics get to use Warhammers (though not much else if they do).

In another game I used the variant Wizard Specialists (Mandatory), and it really added flavour.

Hi,

I bought Unearthed Arcana when it first came out but haven't really used it. There have been several threads about "most useful" books and UA comes up time and time again. What bits do you like and use in your games?

Cheers

Richard

Well, nothing yet, but I've got a character waiting in the wings with a Major Vampire bloodline. Should be fun.
