Intially, I used the real world map as my campaign world and painted an alternate tapestry around it. The hero came from a Viking-esque society who became settlers instead of raiders. It was intended that, eventually, the main PC would become ageless and the world would evolve naturally, winding its way to d20 Modern and, god willing, to d20 Future. As it stands, the campaign world is a very "New World"-type where the hero's new hometown was somewhere near the Florida Keys.
