Core Books vs SRD

Hmm...

If the public (not aspiring to be game designers) wants to use the SRD without buying Wizards' product, I strongly suggest Wizards to strip the document down further, making it more of a toolkit for game publisher and less like a free replacement to the core rulebooks.

Things like leaving out the description of the monster (all fluff) and its culture is a good start. Also, description of the spells. Just give out the game effect like "Fort Save vs. DC 15, or die" without having to describe what happens to the character (again, something like "turns the character into a gelatinous pile of carcass" is just fluff).

Hmm, I actually kind of like that as a concept - it almost turns D20 into an effects-based system, like Hero or BESM.

Meanwhile, I'm going to run with Gez's sugestion and make an experiment of it. From now through April, I will attempt to live life solely with the SRD.

We'll see if it's doable.

I had attempted to post a reply to this, just before the boards' posting problems started.

I'm a techno-addict, and know my way around a computer, but that doesn't stop Windows XP or my CD-RW or my floppy drive or something from malfunctioning every couple months, at least. Bottom line: if you're going to rely on your laptop, I hope you've got a good back-up plan in case it goes down.
