Core rules only for character designs?

Are core rules enough for character design?

  • I play characters crafted entirely from DMG/PHB rules, nothing else.

  • I've got to go to other sources to make a character I'm happy with.

I can, and have, stuck to only the core rules and had plenty of fun. I have also had characters that didn't stick to the core. Which is appropriate depends upon the campaign I'm in.
Another "me, too".

I think from his first post (where he says "I'm more interested in practice than theory") he's asking which do you do more often? Based on your answer, I'm guessing you would fall more under the second option. I would fall more under the first because, while there are some fun options out there, I'm more often sticking to the core stuff than not.

As always, Henry, your wisdom shines through.

While I do enjoy making characters with just the Core Books, I also enjoy some of the options available through other "official" WotC books. In particular, I love some of the varient/optional rules in the Unearthed Arcana.

What do you need even need the DMG for?

The only 3rd Edition character I've played was a Dwarven Fighter/Wizard. I say only as other than that I've DM'ed.... God I wish I could play!

It depends entirely on the concept
Some fit snuggly within the core rules while others need little tweaks (either from supplaments or a kind DM)

i avoid using the PHB and DMG as much as possible.

i use : Men & Magic to make all the PCs i want to play
belive it or not, the game has actually improved over time.
i actually stopped playing D&D sometime after 2nd edition came out due to Glaring deficencies in the rules. with 3.0 though, I almost exclusively play D&D.

I personally almost always use the Core books for my Charaters, there is just something i like about Iconic Characters. i allow any WotC publised product in my games though.
