Core Setting: Nerath Empire

For me, it evokes WoW or FR. And that's not necessarily a bad thing -- an ancient collapsed empire is very much in the mold of fantasy medieval roleplaying (what with the real-world collapse of the Romans to parallel). So far, the touch is light enough that it creates more potential than it destroys, since it's not well-defined.

That said, it won't work for every campaign, so I hope they continue with the "light touch," keeping the flavor of Nerath largely out of the rules of the game. Or else homebrewers will have a lot more work to do to rid themselves of it.
The light touch comment is a good point. It's nice to have some flavor to the races, some history and background, but not enough to disrupt the homebrewers.

That said, one of the cool things about the Creature Collections was the paragraph of Scarred Lands flavor text they put at the front of each monster. I thought it was a nice touch, yet didn't screw with the utility of the monster itself.

For what it's worth, the other two setting search semi-finalists were Rich "Order of the Stick" Burlew and P. Nathan Toomey (who worked on Monster Manual III).

Both designers are still under ironclad NDAs. There was speculation when they were held back that they might be planning to use them for 4e.
Where did other settings, like Dawnforge, finish in the setting search. From what I understand, it was in a final group. Were there any others that went on to get published after the setting search was over?

Dawnforge was in the top 11. It was later released by Fantasy Flight. We don't know the order they finished, other than that Eberron finished first, and Burlew and Toomey's were the others in the top 3.

There's a list of most of the ones that are known about here.
