Cost of Amulet of Mighty Fists (?!)

I was helping another player in my group create a monk character, and while picking out equipment, I suggested an Amulet of Mighty Fists. I don't have S&F (he does), but I've heard it mentioned on these boards. He got back to me and mentioned that the Amulet costs as follows: 6,000 gp (+1), 24,000 (+2), etc.

That comes to a formula of: Bonus squared x 6,000 gp. That's thrice the cost of a weapon with an equivalent enchantment (bonus squared x 2,000), and seems way overpriced to me. Has this been errataed, or is there something I'm missing?

I can think of three possible reasons. First, IIRC, it affects all of the monk's attacks, notably the flurry of blows - so it could be compared to gettting an enhancement bonus to both weapons while two-weapon fighting. Second, it scales with the monk's increasing unarmed damage. Third, it can't be disarmed or sundered.

As a cheaper alternative, there are the Bracers of Striking from Magic of Faerun. They are enchanted just like a weapon with the same costs and apply those properties to your unarmed attacks.

Not exactly. You can only place special abilities on the bracers of striking. So you cannot give them an enhancement bonus. Also bracers of striking are priced as if double weapons.
The most useful thing I have found to do with them is just put a sure striking on the bracers of striking so you can hit anything with DR +5 and it costs you under 6k to do it.

Exacty my opinion :)

Currently play a PsW with Sure Strike Impact Bracers of Striking and an Amulet of Mighty Fists +1. The amulet is just to give me some boost in attack and damage.

They added a power on the Minds Eye area called Metaphysical Body that makes your entire body a +3 weapon. It is a 3rd level power and lasts hours. A lesser and greater version of the power also exists... You might want to consider choosing that if you have the pre-req ability score.

We had a similiar situation, but had a monk that was using Gauntlets of Ogre Power to boost his low Strength score. I let him go ahead and enchant the gauntlets as if they were a magic weapon, but at double the cost since the gauntlets already had magic cast upon them. This has not seriously effected the balance of our game.

FYI: The Amulet of Mighty Fists is priced as if you combined two magic weapons into the same item. It costs triple because the second ability costs +100% (same item penalty).

Personally, I just charge as if it were a double weapon. (I'd also allow a player to get different bonuses for each hand, if anybody ever bothered to ask.)
