This makes me wonder, are Druids effectively unlicensed herbal therapists who couldn't afford to go to medical school?

I feel like Druids have just as much structure to their schooling. I mean... they learn a secret language, and by 2nd level can already change shape! That takes some intense practice of think :)

Are Warlocks lone geniuses who taught themselves with the help of a mentor?

I actually like this for many warlocks. Though it would have fit more if they were still an Int based class as originally intended.

Maybe more like eccentric loners who through luck or determination stumble across the rituals to contact and compact some power.

Are Sorcerers just 'magic geniuses' who are too intelligent for university?

Hehe, probably more like idiot savants based on most sorcerer stat arrays I’ve seen :)

Check out Keith Baker’s blog post, I think called Magicians (just google it) where he gives some great examples of different ways a sorcerer comes by their powers

Are Clerics faith healers whose therapies actually work?

See Druids above. Though I think there is a mix here both rigorous training along with Faith miracle workers.

Are there Wizard scholarships?

maybe individual professors could waive their fees for promising students. I’d think there would be a quid-pro-quo from the other professors as well.
