Cost of combining effects of magic items

Question about the cost of boots that are enchanted with Springing & Striding and also Elvenkind. I said the cost would be doubled of both effects since you are taking away the aspect of the slot item being for a sole purpose. So the 2500 (pre-errata) and 2000 are now 4500 *2 for 9000. Make sense?

And, IIRC, it doesn't matter in what order they are enchanted. The most expensive is applied first then the rest are applied at double cost. Also, when you upgrade magic items you only pay the difference of the old cost to the new one, it doesn't matter what order they are put on in.

Example:

Boots of S&S: 2500
Then later add Elvenkind: 2500 + 2000 * 2 = 6500
You pay the difference to upgrade so: 4000.

Boots of Elvenkind: 2000
Then later add S&S: 2500 + 2000 * 2 = 6500
You pay the difference to upgrade so: 4500.

Same price either way.

Hmm, I don't think I've heard of this before. Sounds like a good idea, though, one that I'll probably start using from now on. Got a quote handy on this one?

DMG, page 243, sidebar, Multiple Similar Powers, but it's 100%, not 10%, as listed. It was corrected in the DMG errata.

Also, see pages 73 thru 75 of Tome & Blood. They go into more detail about similar powers and their resulting discounts/increases in price, and even provide a couple of examples, such as a belt and a staff.

Sometimes the powers increase in price, such as an item that grants a bonus to both Strength and Dexterity, while other times the powers decrease in price, such as with a staff or the belt of many pockets.

I actually though the more expensive ability was doubled misttar. I am going off second hand knowledge and I don't have a book in front of me and I'm too lazy to look it up in the SRD. But I really thought the more expensive part was doubled.

Correct. The most costly ability/power is doubled/discounted first, then the next most costly, then the next, and so on and so forth.
