cost of spells

ShadowMaster

First Post
What is the cost of a spell casted by an other wizard (in a shop per example)? Is there any rule somewhere for that?

An other question: If a mounted character come over a trap (pit), who has to make the ref save? Does both fall in case it is failed?

I assume the first question is just reffering to a scroll? As that is how Wizards pass spells to each other. Any Wizard can learn a spell from a scroll. So, I'd use the scroll price. If you mean just copying it out of another's spellbook, then I imagine that would be of similiar price to a scroll. Probably a little more expensive. The web enhancement for T&B has some stuff about spellbooks. I don't recall if this is in there, but it might be.

I'd say the mount has to make the saving throw and if the mount misses it, the rider is falling with him. Maybe give the rider a harder reflex check if the mount fails his, to see if the rider reacts in time to leap off the mount.

no! not a scroll

The first question is more like. I'm a warrior and want to go to a town and ask a wizard to identify one of my magic item. I also want to ask a cleric to cast magic weapon on my sword. How much will I have to pay for such spells or any other spells?

Player's Handbook, in the "Special Equipment" section. The prices are on the chart next to Mighty bows, Alchemist's fire, etc.

For the horse question I'd say they'd both have to make saves. If the rider made it and the horse fell, that means the guy jumped off in time. If the Rider fails and the horse makes it, the horse stopped in time and the rider went over his head. I would probably allow the rider a bonus though if the horse made it.

Edited out as I was in error. It was in this edition that the table was in. I need to stop looking through old books, I just get things confused.:D

Wow! Who, from WoTC team, rolled a 20 on his hide check for that table?

But, thanks for helping!

The rule you're looking for, about calculating the cost of 'buying' a spell from a mage/cleric, is in the DMG. I don't have it handy or I'd give you page numbers 'n what-not.

I do know that a 6th level spell, if using the 'straight from the book' price, is somewhere between 1500 and 2000gp. That assumes it was cast by a minimum level caster of course. I looked it up after last Wednesday's game, after the DM charged our group 3K each for a Ressurection and a Reincarnate spell. And he kept telling us how bad he felt in getting a couple of us killed when the building collapsed around us. I hate to think what he'll charge us if he isn't sorry about PC's 'taking a dirt nap'. This last casting nearly wiped us out financially.
