I think you're right, but the SRD is a tad vague. Particularly since Speaking is a free action, as is dropping your weapon. However, reading it, I think it's pretty clear that you can't cast a counterspell unless you've readied an action to specifically do it.

Free Action: A character can perform one or more free actions while taking another action normally. However, the DM puts reasonable limits on what a character can really do for free.

Yeah, but you can't speak or drop your weapon unless it's your turn either. What are you getting at?
