Counterspelling

Wierd...

By the rules, I can walk up to the druid and interrupt his 10 minute spell casting by poking him in the eye with a big stick or polearm, but I can't counterspell, because the spell casting has already begun?

I bet the druid didn't bother to start casting defensively when he started the spell. By the same logic above, I can stand next to him and he continues to provoke AoO every round.

Nope! Adding a metamagic feat to a sorcerer spell is a full-round action, and full-round actions can't be readied.

So you're in the "one full round CT spells can't be countered by the same" side, since one full round CT spells can't be readied either ?

If he's working on a 10 minute casting, you can counterspell with a *rock*. :)

That said, I'd say countering with the same spell cancels the effect at the end of the casting time, and you have to start at the beginning of casting, but that hitting him with a Dispel-counter can be done any time during casting to work, since it only takes a standard action to cast and the spell "undoes" magic -- it would unravel the half-completed spell.

There is no point in counter spelling him, just hurt him with a spell and force a concentration check to continue. If he makes the check, he will either have to stop casting his spell to fight you, or continue casting and you get another free shot at him.
