Countries with biggest rpg market?

I was discussing this the other day with some friends and the question popped up. I think it is obvious that US is the #1 country in the global rpg market. Which countries come next? Which countries have the biggest rpg market around the world?

no idea, but I would guess

I'd guess Japan is probably #2. They seem to have enough interest in fantasy & sci-fi over there that I'd imagine RPGs sell pretty well.

I'd guess the UK is pretty high on the list as well.

I've lived in Japan and I saw almost no RPG at all over there. They are fanatic with rpg games for computers and video games, but the table top RPG, which is the oen I meant, doesn't seem to be very popular, specially since they are a very introspective people. I told to my friend that Brazil was probably the second biggest one. He thinks China could be the seonc biggest one, and i have to give him that. If it is something popular there, heck, it could even be the biggest by far, seeing as their population is huge.

Maybe China is #2 based on the sheer size of their population alone - however, my wife is from Nanjing, China, a large city with several good universities, and she'd never really heard of RPGs and really has no concept of Western fantasy (the Lord of the Rings movies were not exactly her cup of tea) Also, I'm sure if anybody in her family was involved in RPGs, I would have heard about it these past 4 years. But, that is just anecdotal evidence.

(if you use minis & the like in your game, China is an awesome place to get gaming accessories at good prices, provided you can get the stuff back home - beautifully carved miniature wooden boats, dragons, other animals, etc.)

In Europe my guess is that Germany would be number one. And I've seen the same as the other poster in Japan. If the RPG is for consoles or PCs it will be played by lots of people but the tabletop or even PnP RPGs are almost non-existant over there.

Dunno about Canada but my guess is that they are not too far away from the U.S. when it comes to how many people play RPGs (%-wise, that is).

I would think Germany #1 for Boardgames... not sure how they rate on rpgs.
