couple questions

First Post
Last time the party rested in a dungeon. They woke up, memorized spells and explored further. Soon they stumbled upon a door they couldn't possibly open. So the mage decides to get another 8 hours of rest, so he would be able to memorize a Knock spell. Which he did, but after openig the door they found another one, also locked. Repeat process. This seemed a bit unreal to me, this way a wizard could cast his daily alotment of spells almost thrice a day. I couldn't find anything in the rules that said that this can not be done, but it seems to make arcane casters extremely powerfull. Any suggestions?

Another question: is it possible to maximize a Dispell Magic? Buffed NPC's would stand no chance against this one...

Thx for all help...

No you can only get your alotment of spells once per day, hence the name SPELLS PER DAY.

How exactly this is done is up to the DM. For example you could say that after refreshing the spell slots the wizard cannot do this again for 24h, or you could just use the day from 00:00 to 23:59 and the wizard can refresh spells once in this time frame.

However, the wizard in your game could still do what he did...

When preparing spells for the day, a wizard can leave some of these spell slots open. Later during that day, she can repeat the preparation process as often as she likes, time and circumstances permitting. During these extra sessions of preparation, the wizard can fill these unused spell slots. She cannot, however, abandon a previously prepared spell to replace it with another one or fill a slot that is empty because she has cast a spell in the meantime. That sort of preparation requires a mind fresh from rest. Like the first session of the day, this preparation takes at least 15 minutes, and it takes longer if the wizard prepares more than one-quarter of her spells.

He must then leave some slots open during the initial preparation. If he had two slots of 2nd level or higher left open this way, he could later in just 15 minutes fill them with the Knock spell.

Still, he can only get to use each slot once per day.

And no, you cannot maximize Dispel Magic because the random part is not the effect of the spell, it's a dispel check/caster level check. Those are unaffected by Empower Spell or Maximize Spell or similar stuff.

And no, you cannot maximize Dispel Magic...

Sure you can!

If the object that you target is a magic item, you make a dispel check against the item’s caster level. If you succeed, all the item’s magical properties are suppressed for 1d4 rounds, after which the item recovers on its own. A suppressed item becomes nonmagical for the duration of the effect.

If it's Maximized, the magical properties are suppressed for 4 rounds :)

But for the caster level check? No way - indeed, the feat text uses Dispel Magic as the example of the sort of opposed checks Empower Spell and Maximize Spell don't affect!

And, if you need something in writing:

Spells: A wizard casts arcane spells which are drawn from the sorcerer/ wizard spell list. A wizard must choose and prepare her spells ahead of time (see below).

To learn, prepare, or cast a spell, the wizard must have an Intelligence score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a wizard’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the wizard’s Intelligence modifier.

Like other spellcasters, a wizard can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. Her base daily spell allotment is given on Table: The Wizard. In addition, she receives bonus spells per day if she has a high Intelligence score.

Unlike a bard or sorcerer, a wizard may know any number of spells. She must choose and prepare her spells ahead of time by getting a good night’s sleep and spending 1 hour studying her spellbook. While studying, the wizard decides which spells to prepare.

Emphasis mine. This is under the description of the wizard class. There is a similar entry for every spellcasting class.

But my question is, what kind of a dungeon is this that the party can rest unmolested for 8 hours three times in a row? :)
