Craft Arms and Armor [item creation]

it says that you have to expend 1/2 the total creation cost in gp ... what if you are upgrading an existing item?

specific dilemna. I have a suit of MW halfplate, and I want to craft it into a +1 suit.

what I think/know: 1/25 in xp is 70xp (MW 1/2 plate= 1,750 gp). [not a problem]

what about the cost for creation? I would assume I could take away the cost for MW and 1/2plate since I already have that provided [and my psychic warrior has no craft skill :-P] ... am I correct in assuming that it will only [only!] cost 500gp to personally enchant (empower).

You are correct, you do not have to pay any more then 1/2 of the 1000 for the +1 enchantment if you already have the MW item. You also only ever pay the XP cost for that number as well. The cost for the mw armor or weapon is not included when calculating those costs.

Examples:
Wizard wants to make +1 MW Half Plate
step 1) Aquire the armor (either stroll to the local smith and buy it for 750 GP, or happen to find it adventuring)
step 2) enchant it using the appropriate feats and paying the cost in GP and XP (1000 GP for plus /2 = 500 GP 1000/25=40XP)

Wizard now want to make the same suit +2
step 1) determine cost differential (4000 for +2 - 1000 for +1 = 3000 GP)
step 2) enchant it using the appropriate feats and paying the cost in GP and XP (3000/2=1500 GP, 3000/25=120XP)

again the cost for MW Half Plate never efects these calculations.

Hope this helps.

As a general rule, you don't pay XP for the item you are enchanting. You pay the XP for the enchantment itself.

Allow me to break it down for you.

MW 1/2 Plate: 750 GP
+1 Enhancement Bonus: +1,000 GP
Market Price for +1 MW 1/2 Plate: 1,750 GP.

Now for your case....

You have the armor, so all you need to do is enchant it.

Cost to add a +1 Enhancement: 500 GP (half of what is listed above).
XP cost to do this: 40 XP (1000 GP / 25)

So in total, it will cost 500 GP, 40 XP, and one day's worth of work.

Clear as mud?

Edit: Had wrong cost for MW 1/2 plate.
