Crafting Cohorts

I'm confused. A cohort advances based on the Leader PC's level. They get XP for each combat and challenge overcome, however. So they can craft from that XP. But don't the go up in level even if they don't have the XP then?

No, the cohort still needs enough xp before he can gain a level.

The math is a bit off though, since you will realize that he will level up much more slowly than the rest of the party, because of the rather retarded formula used to calculate the xp he gets.

I don't think the xp amount is particularly retarded since the cohort isn't usually seen as a full party member, but rather as a supporting character, no matter how hard they fight in battles, etc.

Besides, some DMs (like myself) see the whole system of XPs and Challenge Ratings as a kind of abstraction. I tend to run levelling up more on a system based on when PCs vanquish a certain group of foes and traps etc. My campaign is more of an accelerated system, so probably doesn't necessarily apply to others.
