Crafting Craft Rules (DC 105?!?)

Kemrain

First Post
It's a tossup between General and House Rules but, as I'm asking for rules and not presenting them, and I'm looking for rules in books as well as in people's games, I decided on General.

Has anyone seen some alternate crafting rules? Made from the ground up? I'm sick and tired of the current rules, and I'm ready for a major overhaul. I consitered doing it all myself, but I realised I'd be foolish to do that without even a cursory search for other attempts. Has anyone seen a reasonable alternative the the current Craft skill, and would anyone care to share with me?

What don't you like about them?
the craft rues seem to be designed around crafting weapons and armor, not things like art or tools or buildings. They're also tied to the DnD economy, and I have yet to play in a game that didn't impose it's own economic system on the setting.

there is no D&D ecomony, the one in the book is a joke. I have yet to see anything that makes the craft rules new and different.

What you can do is try to have certain segments of your game population be good at a particular type of craft/profession and give it game significance. For example, the Tailors of InsertCountryNameHere who can produce vestments that give +1 to Hide, Sneak, or both.

Now you have a place you can go to get those particular items and a nice high DC to produce them.

For building buildings (...yeah) have you looked at the Stronghold Builder's Guide? I thought the DCs for making tools were reasonable...

Oh, actually, they have DCs for making art (poems, paintings, etc) in... Races of Stone, I think.

I need to buy 3 different books to get all the craft rules? Hasn't WotC heard of consolidation? they must be making the rules up as they go along. I can do that too, can't I?

I think Sigil's pdf Objects and Treasure d'art has a variant craft rule formula. Perhaps he can speak to it.
I'd be thrilled to hear it!

Well, y'know, each book as "New Uses for <skill>!" That's what this is. I guess it never occured to them to make a book on each of the skills... :p
