Crafting Craft Rules (DC 105?!?)

Well, y'know, each book as "New Uses for <skill>!" That's what this is. I guess it never occured to them to make a book on each of the skills... :p
While that's reasonable, I'd like to see the new uses added tothe old ones in the next printing of the PhB... Like that'd ever happen.

I need to buy 3 different books to get all the craft rules? Hasn't WotC heard of consolidation? they must be making the rules up as they go along. I can do that too, can't I?

of course this stuff isn't in the core...the game is about killling things and taking their stuff, being don't spend a session or three building a shop or raising a barn.

I would just make something up. I don't think there's any way to balance crafted items except against a "baseline D&D economy", which isn't going to help you if your economy isn't similar.

Or smithing a sword or crafting armor? If the skill isn't there for making things, why is it there?

it is there for making things and it works well for arms and armor. It just isn''t a focus of the game si they came up with something that sort of works

Sure! I'd just like to see rules that more-than-sorta work, so the campaign can focus on it a little more. I play in a rather non-standard campaign.

In LEW we use Craft Points. I don't know if it's better or worse, though (I don't like it as much because it's more limiting, but).

I tried reading that variant in UA, but I couldn't wrap my head around it. I thought it was for crafting Magic Weapons, though, not general craft skill use.

Craft points are an option. I'm actualyl reading a about to review a book that makes use of them.

The craft skill as written does work, it just has some problems with really cheap and really expensive items. Instead of being a product of the worth of the item, each should have a number amount goal that the crafter needs to reach based on the size and complexity of the item. THe DC should not be multiplied by the skill check, instead the DC should just be that and the final number should be based on combining lots of skill checks like the option of Arcana Unearthed does. If I were to rewrite the craft rules, that is what I would do.

the system was made formost for magical items, but it could be used for other items with a little help
