CRAFTY GAMES TO PUBLISH MISTBORN RPG
Creators of Spycraft 2.0 to develop RPG Adaptation of Epic Fantasy Trilogy by Wheel of Time Author Brandon Sanderson

September 7, 2008 — PORTLAND, OR: Crafty Games LLC has reached an agreement with popular fantasy writer and author of the final volume of the Wheel of Time, Brandon Sanderson, to publish a roleplaying game based on his epic fantasy trilogy Mistborn. The game will arrive in 2009 and let players create their own exciting adventures in the Final Empire.

Mistborn is an enchanting and innovative dark-fantasy series that’s tailor-made for gaming,” said Crafty Games partner Alex Flagg. “We’re thrilled at the opportunity to work with Brandon to create a product capturing the unique magic, action, and intrigue that’s made Mistborn such a hit with fantasy fans across the world.”

“I’ve been a role player for years and I’ve looked forward to the day when I could help adapt one of my properties as an RPG setting,” said Brandon Sanderson. “Mistborn is the perfect story for an RPG; the magic of Allomancy lends itself well to gaming and there are many untold stories to play out in this world of falling ash and cloaking mists. Crafty Games is one of the premier independent gaming companies out there and I’m ecstatic to be working with them!”

“We’ve got a great relationship with Brandon and he’s already working with us to provide new content created specifically for the RPG,” added Flagg. “Next year [2009] is going to be a great time for fans of Brandon, Mistborn, and Crafty alike.”

About Brandon Sanderson
Brandon Sanderson grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska. While he was in junior high Brandon discovered science fiction and fantasy, which elevated him from a reluctant reader to a voracious one. Brandon studied at Brigham Young University, graduating with his BA in English in 2000, and his Master’s in Creative Writing in 2005. Brandon’s published works to date include Elantris and the Mistborn trilogy, epic fantasy released by Tor, as well as the Alcatraz Smedry books, middle-grade fantasy/adventure from Scholastic Press. Currently, Brandon is at work on A Memory of Light, book 12 in Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. Brandon lives in Provo, Utah with his wife and son. It will be interesting to see the Allomancy rules in action. I'm curious to see how non-Allomancers will fit in the game as well.

We're committed to making Allomancers as exciting as they are in the books but also plan to ensure that other characters have their chance to shine alongside them. Fans of our Spycraft material should be familiar with our methods for balancing character types against each other and while we won't use all the tools we used there (indeed, Mistborn may very well feature an all-new system), we're certain we can achieve the same results.

Thanks for your support! We look forward to bringing this awesome setting to life at your tables!

Let us know what system you decide upon. 3e, tweaked 3e to fit the setting, spycraft, tweaked spycraft, new ogl based system, new non-OGL system or other. Thanks.

I'm looking forward to reading your allomancer rules. I worry, however, that you may fall into the same trap as the Wheel of Time and Star Wars adaptions, in that the "magic" systems are so powerful and unbalanced that they make it less fun to play characters who do not use them. I hope you can model the rarity of actual mistborn and make it fun for players who choose to play something other than an allomancer.

It'll either be Mastercraft (the Fantasy Craft system, which is descended from Spycraft 2.0 but significantly streamlined for faster, easier play) or something entirely new. Depends ulitmately on what we feel is best for the property.

This is exactly what the earlier poster asked about. No worries. We've built lots of settings featuring "magic" before (psionics, super-science, actual magic, etc.) and in every case I think you'll find that the non-users are just as competent and fun to play as the users. ;)
