Crazy Go Nuts

Let me be the first to say it: Unearthed Arcana has a fantastic section on sanity, which is basically taken verbatim from the d20 Call of Cthulhu game (which is acknowledge in the Unearthed Arcana section).
What's a bit... odd to me, though, is that those rules in turn are taken verbatim from Chaosium's COC. Hope they were consulted first, before Wizards decided to make their IP open content.

That seems to be a common concern right now:

PS: GrumpyOldCelt, you might want to check out the the link as well. There is an overview of the CoC/UA sanity system that might help you out.

I would recommend Googling for "Principia Discordia". Read that, then immediately after make up your own rules for insanity. Bound to be pretty insane. :D

And speaking of insanity, there are some cool insanity rules in Unknown Armies. The way these rules work is that you have five major stresses (Violence, Isolation, Helplessness, Unnatural, and Self) with ten notches on the meter, and the more severe the stress, the harder the check is against that particular stress.

If you succeed against the check in question, you gain a Hardened notch, which basically means that you're not affected by a certain severity of that particular stress anymore. If you fail the check, you gain a Failed notch, which means the stress has affected you in a big way, and you must choose a particular reaction (panic, paralysis, or frenzy) to whatever's causing that stress.

If you hit five Failed notches in a particular stress, you go crazy in a manner determined by the stress that you maxed-out your Failed notches in.

If you fill up all ten Hardened notches in two or more stresses, or if your total Hardened notches exceed 35, you've shut yourself out from the outside world and become a sociopath, which means you can't use your passions (Rage, Fear or Noble), nor can you become a godwalker -- plus regular people sure as hell don't want to deal with you.

For more info, see this site.
