Creating a character the old fashion way

WSmith

First Post
While Character Builder is great, I personally prefer to make my Essentials characters the old fashion way, like I have been doing for decades. I roll them up. Now, for Encounters, I am using the specialist array from HotFL just to keep it consistent. For the home games, it's always 4d6, remove the lowest.

My main reason for the post is, I am thinking of typing up a character creation quick reference sheet for my group and I to use to make Essentials characters by hand. I am curious if anyone has already done this. If so, do you have any tips for organization or layout or any other tips.

Any reason to not photocopy the character sheet at the back of the essentials books? It seems like a nice concise way of doing it (and I particularly like the way they put the skills under each attribute)

That's not exactly what I am looking to put together. I want to type up something that minimizes my flipping through the book while making a character. Like it will have a list of things like racial traits or class traits. You would still need the book to pick powers, but things like "Eladrin Weapon Proficiency: Longsword" and "Eladrin Education" etc. in one place.

Don't think there's anything like that outside the character generator (that's be too close to the line for piracy). If you have a DDI account, you should be able to copy-paste just the crunchy stuff for the races/classes into a Word doc and print that out.

IIRC, I tried to copy and paste from the builder and it wouldn't let me. I will try that again. Crunchy bits... that's exactly what I am looking for.

I am not looking to circulate this. It's pretty much just going to be for me and my group to expedite character creation without the builder. We are still going to need HotFL and HotFK to pick powers and feats and such cause I don't really want to type all that up.

Abstruse, thanks for the reminder. I needed to go to the Compendium, not the character builder. I can get all the crunchy bits there. :)

That's pretty much why we are keeping our stuff down to what's in HotFL and HotFK... and maybe a few small things from Dragon Magazine like the Earth Domain.

And Yes, Character Builder can make us lazy, but still mighty useful. :)
