creating a great map handout

Listen to the guy who said to think of your map as an NPC (same for anything textual they find). Whoever made that map wanted to convey something. If they put something on there, it was for a reason; if they left something off, it was also for a reason. I'd say have some things be out of date (a forest that has since been cut down, e.g.) or inaccurate. If you want to hide a cool clue, go for it, but it's not necessary. Enjoy.
