Creating A Homebrew Website

I've just started a new campaign website, and I'm using some free web space provided by freehostia.com

It has seemed pretty stable so far, and it doesn't use any annoying ad's or pop-ups.

I've also set up a message board so players can keep in touch, but that doesn't get used all that much.

Here's the site if you're interested... http://airtha.freehostia.com/index.html
It's pretty lame stuff (and probably badly written), and some of the text is just a rough draught, but that's the kind of thing I've included. I've also pointed out that all the junk on there is not required reading ...it's just there for those players who might be interested, and a place for me to store my notes, ideas, etc.

I've also tried to give it a very 3E look :)

Kris,

I really like the layout of your website. The top and left graphics are very nice. Did you do that yourself?
Yeah, it's mostly done in photoshop.

I wanted to try and give the site a similar look to the core books - though different (if that makes any sense) - so that you think 'D&D 3E' as soon as you see it.

...well that was the plan anyway :)

Geeze, that's not bad at all Kris. I really like the presentation. Your map, was that done using CC2 or did you hand draw then touch it up in photoshop? My maps are pretty big and will probably consume a good amount of drive space. How much space do you get on freehostia?

The map that's split up into 6 pdf's? I've drawn that one in a cheap vector graphics program called Greenstreet Draw4 (Think of a £20 version of something like adobe illustrator :) ). It's pretty basic but I do have another version that I've tinkered with in photoshop (toned down the bright colours and added a parchment effect etc.) that I'll put on there eventually :)

The one on the homepage is just a quick representation (in photoshop) of the immediate area so that the players (and myself) have a rough idea of the shape of the land.

It's all very much a WIP at the moment.

With the free package I think it's 250MB with 5GB bandwidth, and the file size limit is 500KB.

But you could always get yourself a photobucket account and upload any larger images there - and then just put a thumbnail (that links to them) on the actual freehostia site.

(Photobucket is also free and you can upload 1MB images).

I hope that helps :D

I recommend a tiddlywiki... It's like a wiki, but self-contained in a single file. Check out my campaign site for an example: http://taintedlands.tiddlyspot.com/

You can get free hosting at tiddlyspot.com.

Nice thing is you can actually save the page and use it offline... Can't do that with a normal wiki.

I, too, would support the tiddlywiki. I've been looking at using it for my next campaign website. The next campaign is still in design mode (since I haven't ended the current one as yet), but when it goes up, I'll be using tiddlywiki to present the information online. (That, and probably a PDF once I reach that point...)

Hope This Helps,
Flynn

I'm trying the wiki thing out, see Legacies in my sig (halfway between a homebrew and a community project, it's all Creative Commons Attribution 3.0).
