If you are creating your own plane, why wouldn't you be able to set all the variables as per the MoTP?

Because the Genesis spell says you can set "the atmosphere, water, temperature, and the general shape of the terrain." Nothing more.

Also- the demi-plane is located and formed from material in the Ethereal Plane (a local density flux in the Ethereal...draws in surrounding ethereal vapors and protomatter).

I would assume (and this is how I would rule it as DM in my game) that the plane, as an extension of the Ethereal, has the same Time flow as the Ethereal plane.

I actually do this exact thing. For the few who are aware there is an acedemy located on some random plane where members can craft. They pay 100gp per day to stay there which gets put into paying the devils who guard the place. It bumps up the cost of crafting by 20%, and if PC's abuse it too badly I can still have encounters that cause them to lose track of research. IE, they get faced with a number of huge elder fire elementals so they stop to craft a ring of Elemental Command for 200 days. 7 days into crafting they hear rumors of people gathering to attack the fort, if they continue to craft that's their problem. But for upgrading weapons, etc it works fine.

I disagree that it's very little gain... the gain is enormous. And once you're 18th+ lvl, the resources to pull this off aren't that much. Spend a month or so using divinitions to find the proper plane, then move in and summon creatures to create an abode, or use a Daern's Instant Fortress created with a lab.

If it could be done with a month's worth of divinations, then it would have been done so, many times. The results would have become common knowledge (at least common among wizards), and the divinations would not be necessary.

Plus, a month of divinations? What divinations would reliably give the information? Legend Lore and Vision don't generally give detailed information (I'd consider the exact compositin of the Plane Shift fork to be detailed), and what you know about the plane is certainly "rumor". Contact Other Plane might work - but it'd take *lots* of work (one word answers!), there's a risk in each casting, and the powers of other planes (read as "the DM") may not want mortals plane-hopping around to do such things.

Summon a creature workforce? The monster summonings have durations in rounds. You can extend that, but then you're requiring an extra feat. Planar bindings are risky. Planar Ally requires you be a cleric. Neither one gets you all that many servants, and who says that summoned creatures are skilled at construction? Sure, they'll build it, but it'll fall down!

The Instant Fortress isn't a bad idea. But, it isnb't exactly a minor item, now is it?

All this, and if he doesn't have the requisite XP on hand when he wants to create the item, it all goes for nothing? *shrug*

BTW- the Astral is Timeless not faster (page 47 in the MotP).

As far as I can remember (and a cursory glance through the MotP) turned up zero planes with accelerated times. The inner, outer, and transitive planes all have normal time or timeless listed.

Grazzt's right. And IIRC, the DMG even has a sidebar addressing the dangers of having a plane where time flows faster than on the prime. It's not just about making weapons. If you've got a quick way to access it, you can go there to heal, buff before a fight, or cause other such problems.

Even Pandemonium has "Normal Time" listed (though I would have thought it should be "Erratic Time" to showcase the chaos that is Pandemonium).

Don't you mean Limbo? Pandemonium is chaotic, but it's more having to do with evil and sanity. Limbo is the plane of pure chaos.

Yeppers- Limbo is the plane I meant. Sorry about that. But- the wackiness of Pandemonium and insanity surrounding it could work for Erratic time as well.
