D&D General Refresher Course D&D Edition Numbers. AKA Modern D&D Is a Self Inflicted Problem.

Would it surprise you to know I have had the same thought about your own reviews on things?

And yes, I know most people who play 5e now are like that.

Most people who play 5e were not the people who almost totally dominated the sample space when 5e was being developed.

The 5e community today is locked into design decisions made my a team that disliked one specific edition above all others, guided by victorious edition warriors who had an axe to grind and didn't care what it cost to grind that axe.

In other words, most 5e players today are beholden to decisions they have no idea why they got made, nor had any input on, and it's unlikely that they would have made the exact same decisions. I'm quite confident, for example, that the playtest Sorcerer would have been retained, if the current 5e fanbase were the people calling the shots back in D&D Next. Even though that Sorcerer was nothing like the 3e or 4e version! I'm less confident about the Warlock because it was intentionally a little off-putting, which I liked, but I know plenty of folks would not.

Difference is I can comprehend why people do like 4E. It wasn't a badly designed game (over designed maybe). Its a classic example of know thy target audience.

Think I asked you this the other day. Apologies if I missed your answer.

What do you think my favorite edition of D&D is. Least favorite as well if you like.

At least its cheap.
Yep. And you only really need one copy for the table. The SRD can be used for the rest of the group when they don't need to look up something left out of the SRD.

There's a lot of stuff that could be improved from there, but published / out of the box, that's what I'd pick.

I haven't seen anyone play 3.0 since 2002. Last time I played it was 2003.

I think one of the 3Es have hit points about right. Scale PC damage to match I suppose.

It’s also not like there were exact rules around 1e and 2e for what could be in a charged item like a wand anyways except perhaps arcane versus divine spells. But even at that, there were staffs of curing.
The staff of curing in AD&D 1e and 2e avoided 3.x's wand of cure light wounds problems by limiting the device to functioning once per day on any person. Also, staves only held 25 charges, as opposed to wands with 100 (50 charges in 3.x). And while the staff of curing was one of the few items that could be recharged, 2e added an item saving throw for the staff each time it was recharged and on a failure the item was destroyed. So, less resilient than 3.x's wands.
